And so to 'Google Wealth Wizard'.

Here's a guy with a very long sales page who's published a detailed, step-by-step guide to promoting affiliate products using Google Adwords.

As anyone who has ever tried to make money this way well knows, this is not as easy as it might seem. Writing a clickable ad is only the first challenge. There's a whole sequence of steps you have to get absolutely right:

the right keywords to identify your target market. If a surfer is browsing on this keyword, is she about to reach for her credit card or is she just browsing?
all of the words in all of the lines of your ad. You don't want tire kickers clicking your ad or you pay for wasted clicks.
the right product for your market. Is the landing page going to earn you money from the keyword you are paying for?

Most of the early eBooks on this subject skimmed over these vital details with the result that a lot of people lost a lot of money and Google shareholders got rich.

Everyone selling anything on the Internet wants to do it via free traffic from the search engines.

Dream on.

To get any volume of free traffic you'll need to appear within the first 10 search results for tons of different keyword phrases. You'll be lucky if you don't have at least a million competing websites. And your website will need constant tuning and tooling to keep up with the ever-changing 'search engine optimisation' scene.

So how DO you get traffic to your website? You buy it. You can buy a place in the top 10 from a 'pay-per-click' program, the most prominent of which is Google Adwords. When anyone searches for your designated keyword, your ad pops up on the right-hand column of Google's search results alongside the top 10. If they click on your ad, you pay Google. If they click somewhere else, you keep your money.

Sounds simple. But, as many Adwords advertisers have learned to their cost, Google Adwords can be a giant slot machine. You can pay megabucks for clicks and not make a dime.

There is an answer and that is to get educated. You absolutely must study this subject carefully if you are going to use Adwords to get you profitable traffic. 2006-Oct-29 - Question: How Do You Get A Google PR 5?

Answer: By Accident.

Yep. I have a website www.networkorganic.com and it has a Google Page Rank of 5. I didn't do anything particular to get this rankling: it just happened. Let me explain.

I designed and wrote this website for a group of network marketers who wanted a site to presell the products of the company (The One Group) that they represent. The idea is that they each have their own unique domain which they redirect to this website with parameters that personalise the website from a backend database. It's not particularly revolutionary, but it works fine and they're all happy.

What has happened is that a journalist from www.guardian.co.uk has used some of the material from my website in a story only vaguely related to my website's content and has put a link to my website at the bottom of his article. This Guardian Unlimited site is the web presence of one of the UK's leading newspapers and is a PR 8 - 9 and number 216 on Alexa. Heady stuff, and I'm flattered.

But what happened next is totally unexpected. When one journalist quotes a source for his story, others copy it. The last time I looked I had 14 links into my website from 14 different articles, all with my link at the bottom!

I have never spoken or corresponded with any of these journalists: they just copy a source from an article that went before.

I'm not complaining!

2006-Oct-26 - Site Build It!

When I first went into Internet marketing I was as green as grass. OK, I had a background in computing and IT, but I was dumb enough to think I was smart enough to easily master this new medium.

Wrong! I knew nothing about html, css, web hosting, ftp, autoresponders, seo and all the other accoutrements of a successful web business. And I'd never sold anything to anyone in my whole life.

But I signed up for an account at a web host and hoped for the best. When I got the joining email it was written in such opaque and incomprehensible language that I could barely make out what my password was. I knew right away that this was not going to be easy.

So, following a link I found in Rosalind Gardner's excellent ebook, I signed up with Site Build It! (SBI).

Welcome to my blog! This is going to be no-BS guide to Internet marketing, based on my own experiences and telling it like it is. I'm going to review some of the products and services that I have personally used and can recommend and I'll weave in my own story as we go along.

See all those links down the right-hand side under 'Internet Marketing Resources'? Those are the goods that I have used to get myself profitable. I've used a whole lot of other stuff from the snake-pit as well, but I learned the hard way that most of what I bought was junk.
